What are decent programs to get for the apple mac? I have built a hackintosh.

i have aperture, ilife 11 and iwork. what would be good for designing an invitation?

You have to call them apps. Try these maybe: alternativeto.net/soft...

lol @ you have to call them apps

Have you played with iPhoto? God I love iPhoto (until the database corrupts and you have to rebuild your whole library manually). Still love it though.

I too built myself a hackintosh inspired by con. Must grab office for it but its still just a play thing.

I tried the Hackintosh thing once. Then I realised that the best thing about Macs is the hardware and putting OSX on a Windows machine was the opposite of what I should be doing.

0 |

so it worked nicely for you?

im running 10.6.7. i upgraded to 10.6.8 yesterday but i lost wireless connectivity and it was quite sluggish. everything works in 10.6.7 (snow leopard) and it runs well.

getting a digital slr (nikon d3100) soon so quite fancy having a mac about for the image editing stuff as well as a plaything

0 |

Yeah, I just use Photoshop so don't really require a Mac for that - in fact, in work I actually swapped out a Macbook Pro for a Lenovo because the performance of CS5 on OSX was so poor in comparison.

0 |

did you run it using paralells?

0 |

Are Macs really still much further ahead of PCs when it comes to photo editing?

0 |

I wouldn't agree that they are. The best tools for photo editing are Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, and they're both available on either platform. I'd call it a draw myself.

0 |

my main laptop is linux and the photo tools for that are pretty poor

0 |

That is hard to argue

0 |

BTW con, there's a D3200 out soon, not fancy that?

0 |

i looked into it but the improvements are a few extra MP, 1fps extra in HD video and a couple of other small things. not worth the extra £150ish imho. im glad the D3200 is out as it makes the d3100 more affordable

0 |

Yep, still a great camera. I love my Nikon. Lens purchase fever has set in.

0 |

im actually getting it for my gf for her 30th at the end of the month. starting off with kit lens for now.

lens are wile expensive once you go down that road

0 |

do you have the d3100?

0 |

No, I got the D5100 when I was over in the US. The kit lens is great, works well for most things (aside from extreme macro), but I crave things like wide-angle, long zoom, shallow DOF etc.

I used to use adobe photoshop, after effects and logic and ableton but now i only really use my mac for traktor as i plan to get a new laptop soon for production and graphics

0 |

Con - yeah it worked a treat on my Samsung N130. Only problem was the Realtek wireless chip isn't supported (internet advice was just not to try) so I bought the wireless chip from the mini 10 (broadcom) which worked right away.
Tbf, I had linux distros on recent 3.x kernels and the old wireless chip still periodically dropped so it was £5 well spent to get a new one.

0 |

thats great, what version are you running? 10.6.7?

0 |

Yeah, I haven't updated anything yet (so the same iso you had linked). It does well on the atom tbf.

What is the main point of a hackintosh ? To get mac only programs, use osx or i take it runs two separate boots fow windows and osx ?

0 |

I just wanted to use OSX tbh... I had an old netbook which wasn't doing much so I installed it on that. You probably could dual boot it but I never really use windows (I have an XP VM if I need to run office or the like).

0 |

Nik, it's for people who want a Mac but are too poor.

0 |

it would be handy if u wanted to use a mac only program like logic pro. afaik it makes pcs run better, even tho i think it only runs older mac osxs like snow lepoard etc.

0 |

had an old netbook sitting in a drawer unused for a year and found it was great for hackintoshing. its fun to play around with and its nice to have an extra OS about the house.

crickster, these are the instructions for installing the 10.6.7 update. www.osx86.net/10-6-sno...

i ran nbi 085 immediately after running the kext utility before rebooting and then booting up with the -f -v flags

i think 10.7 (lion) and 10.8 (mountain lion) only work with 64 bit processors.

think someone made a 32 bit kernel for osx86 lion, then you have to install a finder hack as finder only works in 64bit as well

Not poor, just frugal

CS6 on mac is pretty amazing and LR4 is a pretty fantastic upgrade over the 3rd one. At the current price any photographer would be mad not to at least try LR4 out.

My missus recently got a Nikon D4. Its a mindblowing camera. I had a d800 but sold it due to silly file sizes - d700 is still good enough for me until they properly replace it.

Anyone know any good free imaging software for Macs? I use Acronis for PCs, but not sure it'll do the job for a Mac.

0 |

carbon copy cloner seems to be the best recommended one. it's free as well
