Slieve Donard Climb

1

How long and how difficult is it? Should a 20 a day smoker who only runs to catch buses attempt it?

Yeah. It's a piece of piss.

0 |

wee buns. Its not really a "climb" more of a dander. Mind you bring a decent waterproof and wear decent boots.

0 |

I get out of breath climbing steps. Ill be needing an airlift. Maybe going to newcastle for a trip. If the weather is good, ill make an attempt.

0 |

The prob is only really if you try doing it half steaming in trainers, taps aff on a sunny day, the weather turns and you end up calling out mountain rescue like loads of fucking goons do every year.

0 |

Scundered for anyone that couldn't manage a good country walk.

0 |

Is there not a donard route that's tough enough though? My sister climbed it last week expecting it to be a wee dander and wasnt back down til 6 hours later, she was saying it was steep as fook too

0 |

You could it up and down in about 5 hours

0 |

You could it up and down in about 5 hours, steal chep cider, 5 star it up, like a wee giant ann

0 |

If you get a good day, the view of the coastline and all around is stunning

0 |

The tourist office in Newcastle were telling my da that the fastest recorded climb was 15mins?!

0 |

That would be the descent.

Record for up and down, starting at Newcastle Centre is 55 minutes.

0 |

What's the distance?

0 |

was supposed to head down yesterday but was hung drawn and quartered.

HAHA! :D

0 |

3 hours max up and down. Its a shite walk though.

0 |

Where's your fav walk in NI, PJ? Trying to get out for more walks but it's tough finding the time during festival season.

0 |

Silent valley is amazing though not really much effort involved in it.

0 |

Donegal though for a weekend is definitely worth it, pretty spectacular in places.

0 |

Love silent valley. Never went further than the damn though.
I really like Castle Ward as well.

Drove to donegal at the weekend, but hadn't done my homework. :-(

whats the easy way up? through donard forest?

0 |

if your going to go up donard, start at donard car park and head up that way. Its handy enough to go up and down, but the better views in my opinion are from the back of slieve commedagh which is to the right of Donard. There are loads of rock formations.

Go up donard, then back to the saddle, and why not go up Commedagh as well. It will only take an extra half an hour, and you will have experienced both.

Donard lets you see the coast water etc, but the reservoirs behind donard etc are brilliant to look at. Theres a tiny beach on ben crom reservoir. I went up Doan and Ben Crom on friday, then headed over to watch the red arrows go by!

lol I thought I had climbed Donard last year only to see the fucker further on over to my left. Went from Donard park and have to say the signposting was very poor. The one I climbed looked tougher than Donard itself even if it wasn't as high. Literally had to drag myself up the last 50/100 feet grabbing onto heather and stuff leaving the GF behind. Any wonder I was the only one at the top of it lol.

few boys in work are doing 7 peaks over 700m in one day this saturday

maniacs

0 |

lol at muff. That map says you have to go in from the backside of the mountain. I thought you had to go up from newcastle.

0 |

Ciaran, im doing that myself toward the end of august, i done five of them there in june and by fuck it was tough going!

munchingmonster ignore that map, its the map ill be using for that seven summits over 700 meters, i linkedup the wrong one.

go from the donard carpark. the signposting is shite. I honesltly think if you get going you'll settle into it after about 30 minutes. I always find the first 30 minutes the hardest walking.

Munchingmoster?

lol be funny if it was

0 |

lol Muff!!

I really want to climb it, i was just saying the other day, it was supposed to happen this weekend. Maybe next Tuesday if it's nice.

I remember going on a first date a few years ago climbing up the mournes, took the wrong/hard way up. I was in flat boots and dress, got bogged up to my armpits.. We got up and over the other side to climb down to some lake.. stopped to get a BBQ going. It started lashing and a crazy fog started coming in over us. So we had to quite quickly find a way back down the mountain again. Ended up having the BBQ back at home.. but it was such a drama. Good craic tho

Wasnt me. Lol.

0 |

Reckon I'm gonna conquer this bad boy for the second time this weekend lads.

0 |

What route you taking?

0 |

Probably just go straight up through the forest, past the ice-house thing and then swing left, over the BABBLING BROOK and up to the wall where we'll stop for hot soup and sarnies. After that we'll stay close to the wall right to the top to protect us from the crosswinds. Any better routes?

0 |

Nice use of caps on 'babbling brook', Pez. A wonderful little conglomeration of words.

1 |

That's the trad route. Bit steep m8. You could enjoy more water features by ascending via the Bloody Bridge route, through the abandoned mine and up to the other side of the wall.

0 |

Castle wards a shit hole

0 |

Ha. Cheers Kisch.

0 |

Sounds better Rubick. Easy enough to find the start of that route?

0 |

Instead of parking at Donard Park, just drive right through Newcastle until you see the coastal parking area on the left. It's about a mile and a half outside the town. The route starts more or less opposite it, key bouldering area that. Commanding views of the Irish Sea the whole way up.

0 |

Class. I think that's that decided. Cheers pal.
