5.1 Surround Sound

1

Right - got 5.1 surround sound unit but the only inputs are your standard red and white stereo connections.
Similar to the inputs here on the left:
(no digital inputs)
The Philips HDtv doesn't have any audio outputs. (just hdmi and scarts for video+sound)
The new tivo box only has optical output and same for the ps3.
Looks like we need a new surround sound.... Anyone any recommendations?

(PS - does above sound right? Can't see how else to get around it.)

you can only get 5.1 through digital inputs, red & white phono inputs will only net you mono surround

+1 on digital optical or hdmi in

Ah right - well looking for optical inputs then! Do most tvs have an optical output these days? Sounds like this is going to be a problem then if I'm going from the tivo box & ps3 into the surround sound as opposed to going from the tv to surround sound. I'll need 2 optical inputs if I was going that way.

I think your right enough, the PS3 defo has an optical out, hook that to the TV and use the HDMI for the TV. Tbh i didnt know HDMI carried the same signal as an optical but I aint gonna argue with decks, this is his field

**hook that to the TV via optical cable and use the HDMI for the Tivo

thats what i do, all my devices into hdmi then tv optical out into surround

Not all TVs support DTS pass through, so that won't work in all instances.
Love my Onkyo, hdmi for everything then one cable to my TV

Aye - that's what I was hoping but don't think there is optical in or out from the tv. I'll have another look here..

Love the Onkyo's. Still have my tx-sr875 receiver. Beast of a receiver, although a few years old now. Still sounds great, although has starting to show its age with no networking and 3d capabilities.saying that, haven't been that impressed with the 3d content I've seen.
