Building a HTPC

1

Loads of electronic have been written off with ze flood, need to throw something together to watch movies and tv shows on. Thinking 400 would be enough, I have a core2duo lying about too.

Anyone build one recently?

That's all you need, eBay the core2

My a Mac mini. Put Windows 7 on it. Done and dusted.

0 |

LOL @ a mac mini

0 |

lol all you want. They're wee beauts and look a hundred times better than any HTPC abortion you might build.

0 |

i think for Decks substance > style, which is the correct way of thinking

0 |

yeah, i want to know how many gpus cores are sitting on teh motherboard and if it supports DTS-HD

do mac minis even play 1080p yet?

0 |

Lose any data/photos etc.? What a mare!

0 |

Only data I lost was save files on xbox 360 - 100s of hours poured into Mass Effect.

All the rest is replaceable

0 |

Knowing you you maniac that's all the excuse you need to replay all 3 again

0 |

nah, can't be arsed

probably won't replace the xbox as there is nothing coming out for it. lucky my ps3 survived

0 |

my Xbox hasn't been switched on in over a year, grab an Asrock & XBMC and your sorted for all our Htpc needs

0 |

My Mac mini plays 1080 and it's 3 year old.

0 |

Are the Asrock boxes noisy at all?

0 |

Completely silent, fucking excellent wee box tbh, has netbook internals so is cheap to run and coupled with XBMC can play anything you throw at it. Built in infrared means I can control it with my media remote as well

0 |

Nice thread. Im looking for a decent front end for my NAS. Have a wee WDTV Live which is ok but cant run XBMC so its for shit. Have a Apple TV 3 as well, but it hasnt been jailbroken yet. Think im gonna settle for a Boxee, they look the business. Anyone used it before?

0 |

Managed to get a wee temp setup going in a spare bedroom, looking into the asrock.

Think I'll go for something with xbmc, great wee program with support for HD audio

0 |

It's been rock solid for me, as long as you your not planning on any heavy usage (unzipping a 20gig files whilst editing a 4k video with crysis running in the background) its perfect as media center, web browsing and downloading

0 |

Those wee ASRocks looks the ticket.

0 |

This is more suited to Deckard's needs and budget:

0 |

I'm getting a 404 here.

0 |

All those horrible open ports on the front of them are fucking ghastly.

The Vision HT series ( www.asrock.com/nettop/... ) Would've looked fine if they had've shifted the ports away.

Those horrid ghastly ports on the front are dead handy for plugging in USB pens, iPhones etc instead of having to fiddle round the back

0 |

horrible ghastly ports......

0 |

Ghastly!

0 |

I imagine one would spill ones earl grey all over the Persian rug fiddling about with ports and whatnot on a mac mini

Much is that one?

0 |

579 but I'm thinking there will be something closer to my 400 budget, nice build..the case looks the same size as a wireless bridge

technology like

'mazin' like

0 |

The ivybridge one is far far tidier looking. Blatant copy of a 2009 era Mac mini though. When they were much bigger.

"the case looks the same size as a wireless bridge"

Are you high?

0 |

didn't look at the dimensions..it looks quite small

simple question...can your mac mini do this:

HDMI audio pass through (Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD Master Audio)

0 |

Can his mac mini Accept Bluray?

0 |

You could get a BluRay player and high quality audio device for a Mac mini, yes.

0 |

So the macmini doesn't support HD audio as standard?

0 |

Just had a read. Yes, the hardware is capable of HD audio via the HDMI port, however, OS X doesn't support it.
If you run Windows natively on a Mac mini then it will indeed do HD audio via the HDMI.

0 |

Why would I want to give up that 'superior' OSX for Win7?

0 |

For HD audio.

0 |

Just ordered myself a Raspberry Pi for 35 on Ebay and am gonna install XBMX (RBMC) on it. Anyone used one yet?

0 |

Would love to play around with the pi. Some day. Also see you can get a decent wifi shield for the arduino. I have a boxee box and a nas in the office for streaming.

0 |

Had a Boxee already, it was dead on but just wasnt the same as running XBMC. I have a wee NAS under my telly, the Pi is hopefully gonna do me as a front end till I can get something bigger and better sorted. Need a media streamer, was thinking maybe a Sonos bridge attached.

0 |

Sonos < Squeezebox Touch IMHO

0 |

Really?! Will look into that as well then, I take its cheaper than the Sonos? I really want something I can use my Ipad with to control whats being played.

0 |

Boxee have stopped building updates for open downloads. Just the box users now. The box can handle1080 mkv streams effortlessly over wifi and the interface is sweet. I think theyve totally branches away from XMBC but there last update had some cool improvements.

0 |

Using the XBMC remote on iPad is freaking awesome!

0 |

What you streaming it aff though?

0 |

XBMC remote and indeed XBMC on the iPad are awesomefest

0 |

all media sits on and is played by a Mac mini.
I would have anything other than a Windows HTPC or Mac mini to play media. WDT TV, Boxee, PS3, all have issues imo. Full OS or nothing in my books.

0 |

right lads... Raspberry Pi... gimmi the shiz... could I get one, stick it in a wee box, install XBMC on it, then stream all my media off my QNAP NAS and control via iPad and XBMC remote??

Want something that can run XBMC to plug into TV and stream media through, but don't want to spend big money.

0 |

I run xbmc, icefilm, 1channel etc on my ipad running into telly
