Good Hotel Thread

1

i stayed in the killyhevlin hotel last week and this has inspired me to make a thread for those that have stayed in hotels in ireland recently and to sort of review it briefly. hopefully get some ideas of future places to go.

the killyhevlin is just outide enniskillen and is a four star hotel though i feel its a bit dated. for what i payed, we got a room with a window that didnt open which was a bit of a disappointment. the swimming pool & hot tub closed at 8pm despite being advertised in the broucher as open to 10pm.

The restaurant is best avoided and youre better to go into enniskillen to get food rather than pay for the overpriced and old food in the restaurant. in fact when i picked out the wine (at £15 a bottle, hardys estate) the waitress decided that was a good time to inform me that the very wine i had chosen was on sale in asda for £10 for three bottles. The onion rings were obviously old and refrtied and the vegetable medley was soaking in oil. the garlic potatoes we had sent out were actually dauphinoise potatoes.

what annoyed me the most was that we kept getting asked if we were here on the deal. as we booked using a phone we werent offered any deal which was basically what we paid and would have got the meal for free but they didnt notify us of this when we were booking. i know this probably sounds li ke a shitty review but it is a nice enough hotel, the scenery is great. in fact maybe thats the only thing going for that place these days. next time im there id prefer to check out the manor house hotel.

i see the merchant hotel won best uk hotel this year. id like to try the fiztwilliam next.

Most Best Western hotels I've tried have been spot on. Love a wee night in a hotel!

That sounds cack though, I'd heard good things about the Killyhevlin too.

0 |

the killyhevlin offer the lakeview room for £25 more than a standard room which overlooks the A4 dual carriageway. frankly for the money i spent i was expecting a lot better.

0 |

The Fitzwilliam is nice enough, rooms are clean and tidy but nothing exceptional, food is pretty good as well tbh I expected it to be a bit more wow, lovely inside mind just wasn't blown away by the room.

0 |

is the Fitzwilliam 5star? same as RJ, thought it was grand, nothing spectacular. although the whole time i was in it i was sideroads.

0 |

i stayed in the merchant hotel about 2 years ago and i think that has spoiled me tbh. everything about the merchant is pure class, when you check in the concierge shakes your hand. little things like that add up to the whole experience. youre even allowed to bring a bottle of champagne up to the hot tub on the roof. the killyhevlin wouldnt let us do that

0 |

how much is the Fitzwilliam roughly?

0 |

staying in Lough Erne for a couple of nights this weekend, for a wedding. looking forward to it, drink is meant to be extortianite though

some lovely hotels but's so expensive. three nights for a long weekend with dinner your talking guts of 500 quid then drinks and any days out

i always get close to booking then usually opt for a week in the sun for 200 quid more

0 |

i carried 5 days over from last year in work so had 32 days to take off this year. since im not heading on holiday abroad i will be availing of mid week hotel deals

ftw!

I LOVE this hotel in Killarney. If you ever go there, stay in it. The spa is amazing.

I'm going to the Lake District in a few weeks with all my bf's family and staying here:

It's not quite the Plaza but it does have an outdoor hot tub.

Staying in Cabra Castle for my friends wedding in August, which I haven't been since my brother got married there 11 years ago.

The 2nd for 105 2 people 2 nights bnb n 1 dinner.
Good oul groupon, they were both bargains. I no longer stay in hotels that dont have helipads :-)

I went down and stayed in the Manor House Hotel in Enniskillen over my birthday this year. They do a deal on their website if you stay Sunday you get Monday free (£65 per person, including a full breakfast each morning).

Really nice big hotel converted from a massive old mansion, set in large grounds right beside the lakes. Really relaxing place with a decent pool/steam room/sauna and the food from the bar is well above the standard I was expecting.

I'd recommend it to anyone thinking about going down that way.

Lol speaking of free breckies the one we got each day in glenlo abbey saved us €32 each. Who the fuck pays €19 for a fry n €13 for a continental breakfast?
Was beaut tho n was served in big old ballroom

Went for a meal with my gf last year at the killyhevlin. On arrival we went for a window seat at the dining area but were informed it's not open, so had to settle with the sofa. We were the only people there under 60 and some poor old guy in a wheelchair with a tracheostomy kept making the most vile noises while we ate. I ordered the vegetarian 'option', which was extremely pungent and undercooked cheese pasta that left me feeling ill. Asked the bar staff for a coffee, they told me to go through to the other bar until the waitress stepped in and said she'd make it, insinuating the barmen were just lazy cunts. Final insult came after dinner when the manager came over to ask only us (no one else) if we'll be staying long as they want to move the furniture, which was bullshit, the sofas we sat on had obviously not been moved in years.

The views were indeed spectacular.

Was Hugo Duncan not there entertaining the guests at the Killyhevlin? He's a regular down there.

0 |

0 |

+1 on the radisson blu in cavan also. Class place to spend a couple of days relaxing.

0 |

Stayed overnight in one of the top floor suites at the Malmaisen this one time, very nice it was too and due to the surround sound not working on the system in the bedroom, they opened up another room attached to the suite which is like an extended living area. Proper 5star'in it up

0 |

Brooks in Dublin was a proper nice wee hotel, centrally located, chep and the rooms where lovely, decent breakfast as well

0 |

Farnham Estate in Cavan was brill

Galgorm Manor do great deals. Stayed last November and paid £190 for me and the girlfriend to stay one night. Included 5 course meal for 2 in the river room where Chris Bell from The Great British Menu is head chef. Also included full breakfast for 2 the following morning. Highly recommended.

I once stayed due to work in the railway hotel in enniskillen.

It was fucking grim. The food was ok in an eating at your grannies kind of way.

Portable crt tv (not even freeview!), pink bathroom suite. Over looked tesco/asda etc. It was constantly roasting too.

I stayed in Belle Isle Castle down there too, its utterly superb.

0 |

Slieve Donard is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in, we had a suite. The bath had disco lights! We got engaged there, and ended up getting steaming, kinda regret that as I was too blocked to appreciate the room.

The dinner we had was outstanding, Im not a big steak eater but holy fuck it was great.

I never get to see hotels these days aside from work.

Malmaison is pretty great but its really a hotel for getting full, eating, and having sexual intercourse in. The place really is not set up for people who want a view or a good nights kip.

Fitzwilliam comes highly recommended, never set foot in it though.

Merchant is excellent. Staff always exceptionally friendly.

0 |

Stayed in malmaison and boked all over the carpet

0 |

I told you mf, you didnt have to try and swallow it.

this needs to be put on tripadvisor and the like rite now.

0 |

the good thing about the merchant is you never really have to leave it, you can get food there, berts or cloth ear and then get cocktails in the cocktail lounge.

the killyhevlin closed the restaurant at 9:30 and that was it.

0 |

Just booked this farnham estate place y'all are raving about, better be good!

0 |

Haha playford, spot on!

Never get to stay in hotels anymore either but have rathmullan house booked for August. So excited, have heard great things!

0 |

roe park in limavady was quality, really good service and decent (mainly local food). Some nice pubs in town too

Galgoram is top notch, very pricey but surroundings and settings make up for this

Would highly recommend the bushmills inn, not exactly a hotel in setting but food was brilliant and whiskey selection as good as to be expected

0 |

When I was there 2 nights I could easily have stayed a 3rd, I loved the remoteness of it

0 |

Spent the weekend @ Farnham estate...really nice place but its proper remote and therefore would only suit ones looking a relaxing weekend away. Loads of pregnant women and couples about the place. Suited us as we just wanted a quiet getaway.

The spa and swimming pool is free for all residents and was top class. The open was on the tv all day so I was able to entertain myself in between times but def wouldn't be hanging around for more than 2 days.

As there is nowehere else local to spend your time the have you by the balls on the booze prices (€7.10 for pint bottle of magners) though I'm sure anywhere in the south is just as expensive. And with the euro rate as it is now, checking out wasn't as bad as it couldve been. 8/10

0 |

Haha bizzare, I'm currently using the wifi in the radisson Farnham estate. An can safely say its top notch, The remoteness is what I'm after. Booked three nites bed breakfast and one evening meal for 129 euro pp. it's a fuckin steal. With ten of the family, so we upgrade to a suite, WELL WELL worth it. Basically a self contained aprtment. Massive living area. All here ATM, boozing away waiting on room service.

The spa is quality considering its included in the price. Don't mess around get down here for a weekend.

Good thread idea con!

Europa was piss I thought, room just a wee small box and I broke the window within 30 seconds

0 |

Slieve donard is indeed amazin stayed in it at a wedding last year, stayed in slieve russell recently in cavan great hotel if not marooned out in the middle of nowhere, but loads to do in it, fantastic golf course.

Whats the europa like to stay in, booked into it this fri and sat night?

0 |

Does anyone know which ones best between the radisson blu and the fitzwilliam?

0 |

www.rimrockresort.com

Stayed there for four nights last week. Overpriced.....slow service. Nice to pick up your room key then find some strange bloke asleep in your/his room!

Id say for the price..... avoid!
