We use those at work, I don't like them. (Thinkpad)

0 |

the vaio e series are great, bought one just before xmas, thats a good price

0 |

TF5 is always right.

0 |

Work used to give us Thinkpads (R61) and they were hewn from granite.

0 |

they will never break.

0 |

Flimsy and plasticy.

specs seems alright

0 |

Near £600 with integrated shitty Intel graphics? Avoid tbh

0 |

Anyone looking a basic, but decent quality laptop for a relative or something, this is a decent wee deal... www.bespokeoffers.co.u...

Those IBM ThinkPads were rock solid, and you get Windows 7 on it.

0 |

got one of the slimline thinkpads for work. really good. the last version was a brick but would take a lot of punishment.

0 |

I have a ideapad for 8 months now. its a beast. Leave it in work now I have a 13 inch macbook air. This thing is brilliant.

0 |

Almost bought a thinkpad few weeks ago but got a whopper deal on an elitebook

0 |

£100 cheaper and it flips over to become a touchscreen like tablet

1 |

Shit processor and screen though.

Been looking myself last few weeks and why are so many laptops 15"+. Hate big heavy laptops as defeats purpose of having something to carry around. I'm looking something light and thin. Was looking at this but bit more than I wanted to spend

www.asus.com/uk/Notebo...

0 |

Ideally I want to spend as little as possible lol.

0 |

Same here, I need to make compromises :)

1 |

Is that computer place in Smithfield still there?

0 |

Mplex? I think it's called. Not sure but did they sell laptops?

Argos have a refurb store on eBay and they come refurbished with 12 month guarantee

0 |

As far as I remember they did aye, was in a few times for bits n bobs. Argos sounds like a plan tho, I'm a very basic type of gal when it comes to these things, as long as it works and I can use soulseek, happy nuff.

0 |

I got my laptop screen replaced on my old lonovo there... the guy in the shop was just rubbing the it shiny metal lid admiring it... kinda creeped me out a bit... but its a cracker machine.

what's the deal with replacing laptop motherboards... can you upgrade then like pc ones... or is it an exercise in futility

0 |

No not really. Laptops are mostly built with the components to work with each other. You can't upgrade processor etc though sometimes if its unsoldered and there are other models within the same range with different processors you can swap them.

Google the make of your laptop and add upgrades to the search then look through forums

0 |

no pav the motherboards on laptops are specially designed to suit that particular laptop placement of ports, design of case etc.. all your able to do is swap out the hardrive and ram unless its a "gamer" laptop in which case you can swap out the video cards

0 |

babs that one i linked is seriously chep, maybe not 5star chep but its gotta be around 3.5 star it up, besides all you want to do is browse, do a bit o downloading and whatnot so why not do it on a laptop that can also double as a handy tablet for those bedtime surfing sessions? Call into currys i think they stock those yogas and at least it'll give you a feel for it

0 |

They do stock them. The 300, 500 and may have the 700s in

0 |

That one lemac linked is a good deal.

0 |

I thought so, bought one myself. The yoga only has 2gb RAM, you'd struggle to do much beyond facebook on that

0 |

Yeah lemac, it'll be a decent wee machine that. For comparison, I got my Samsung laptop which I use for work back in June 2011 (£399.97). It has an i3 (Intel Core i3 380M), 4GB DDR3 RAM (@ 532MHz (7-7-7-20) and Intel integrated graphics. It was pretty quick since new, but about a year or two ago I stuck in an SSD and it made it silly quick, even now. It boots from cold in about 15 seconds and pretty much every app and piece of software runs extremely quick. It's not going to run FPS games and the like, but it can handle basic games and most run of the mill graphical tasks, no sweat.

For a near 5 year old laptop I'm actually really surprised it's still running so well. No need for an upgrade for the foreseeable future, as long as everything holds up. But since it now has an SSD, there's really not much that can go wrong.

First thing you should do when you get it, once you've activated Windows, etc... format and install Windows 10 on fresh and get rid of any shite bloatware. Always a resource hog on new laptops, and all they do is give hassle down the line.

I've a 2012 HP elitebook that runs sweet. Has dual drive ssd and a 7200 HD along with 8gig and an i5 processor. Got the laptop ex display for 220 and the ssd for 70 so all in for under 300 and the laptop retailed for over a grand. Bargain

But I won't something thin and light for bringing to tech each day and keep my music laptop separate.

0 |

This is decent and has a ssd drive

You got the laptop yet, lemac? Know someone who's possibly after one.

0 |

its up in my mas but i havent collected it yet, will grab it tomorrow
